Skincare Must-Have: Konjac Sponges

People are always looking for the “perfect” skincare product: something that is not only effective, but feels comfortable to use. Like most products in the consumer world, skincare has trends, too. One product that’s really gained prominence in the skincare world over the last few months is the konjac sponge.

What is a Konjac Sponge?

Konjac sponges are made from 100% pure konjac root, which is a plant that has been grown and used as a medicinal food in Southeast Asia for hundreds of years. After the plant is harvested, the starchy stem is mashed to create a type of gelatine, which is then used to form the sponges themselves. The sustainable, non-toxic sponge can be used for both your face and body, on its own or with your favourite soap or cleanser.

What do Konjac Sponges do?

Primarily, the konjac sponge hydrates the skin, balances its pH level, and removes dirt and oil. It’s also a natural exfoliator, leaving the skin feeling fresh, soft, and smooth. These factors make the sponge great to use on all skin types, including sensitive, acne-prone and even blemished skin, since it isn’t as abrasive as traditional sponges or washcloths.

How do I use the Konjac Sponge?

The dry sponge is small and hard, similar to a pumice stone. When you soak it in warm water, though, and you’ll watch it almost come to life before your very eyes. It expands and becomes soft, squishy, and ready to use.

Using a circular motion, gently scrub the sponge over your skin. When finished, rinse it with warm water and gently squeeze the sponge between the palms of your hands, keeping its full shape. Wringing your sponge will damage the konjac fibres. If you used a cleanser, squeeze the sponge until all traces of soapy residue are gone.

Konjac sponges are biodegradable, and naturally shrink away with use. It’s recommended to start with a fresh sponge every four to six weeks, to avoid germ or soap build-up. You can even compost your sponges once they start to break down.

So where can I find one?

Currently, Luvia carries two styles of Konjac sponge: a small, round sponge for your face, and a wider, rectangular sponge for your body. Luvia also has three types of sponges, with different ingredients to combat common skincare problems:

  1. A white Pure & Natural sponge for use on all skin types,
  2. A black Bamboo Charcoal sponge to cleanse and soothe oily, acne-prone skin, and
  3. A Green Tea sponge, which softens and improves the elasticity of skin for a more youthful appearance.

While there is never such a thing as the “perfect” remedy for keeping skin clean and healthy, it’s safe to say that the qualities and benefits of the konjac sponge are certainly enticing, and is why it’s become all the rage for trend setters and seekers alike.
